Stroud set for Sodbury challenge in Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Trophy

THE Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Trophy continues on Sunday with one preliminary round match, Stroud 2nds hosting Chipping Sodbury. The winners will be away to Golden Hill 2nds.

Five WEPL clubs, meanwhile, have progressed to the next stage of the ECB’s Club Twenty20 after qualifying from preliminary round triangulars.

Bedminster went through courtesy of trumping hosts Weston-super-Mare and Congresbury with opener Max Tryfonos (main image, courtesy Jason P Belcher) smashing half centuries in both encounters.

The left hander crashed 57 off 47 (four fours, three sixes) in a 12-run triumph over Congresbury and followed up with an unbeaten 55 from 46 (six fours and a six) in a four-wicket defeat of the Seasiders completed with more than four overs to spare.

Thornbury are also into the last 12 after dispatching hosts Winterbourne and Stroud. Marc Lezar thumped 72 off 44 (seven fours, four sixes) in a 57-run success against Stroud while Josh Riggs kept anyone on the boundary on their toes with 30 off only 11 (one four and four sixes) in a 27-run defeat of Winterbourne.

Scott Montgomery produced arguably the innings of the day with 87 from 43 (six fours, six sixes) for Gloucester who held their nerve for a last ball four-wicket victory over hosts Cheltenham.

And the wicketkeeper maintained momentum with 50 off only 20 (six fours, four sixes) in a 122-run humbling of Painswick to see his side through.

There were also group wins for Taunton St Andrews and Trowbridge, while one triangular is scheduled for Sunday with Lansdown preparing to welcome Bishopston and Bath.

Also on Sunday, it’s the second regional round of the Voneus Village Cup.

Rockhampton, finalists in 2013, are away to Corse & Staunton in the last eight of the Gloucestershire group where it’s also Winterbourne v Frocester, Painswick v Oldbury-on-Severn and Apperley v Cam.

Dumbleton, in the Worcestershire group, entertain Bredon while Langford, in Oxfordshire, are home to Oxford Downs.
