Week 7 WEPL round-up

BOBBY Naeem claimed career-best figures of 9-22, including a hat-trick, to put Downend on course for a ten-wicket home crushing of Taunton Deane in WEPL Premier One.

The ball swung from the start for the 26-year-old who captured the first two wickets to fall after his side won the toss.

Opening partner Matt Jackson then got in on the act with a dismissal before Naeem ran through the rest of the opposition who were dismissed for only 43 in less than 11 overs.

Naeem, whose previous best league figures for Downend were 5-43 back in 2015, hit the stumps five times and captured two lbws to round off a day to remember.

Downend, who began the day bottom of the table, needed only seven overs to wrap up the points, Ben Ford unbeaten on 32 from 21 as his side moved up to eighth.

Leaders Clevedon, meanwhile, made it four in a row with a battling three-wicket success at Bedminster.

Cheltenham suffered an 18-run reverse at Bridgwater while champions Potterne blitzed Chippenham by eight wickets and Bath overcame Lansdown by 35 runs.

Brothers Marc (67) and Dan Lezar (56) shared an opening stand of 130 for Thornbury who chased down a target of 266 away to Corsham in Premier Two Glos/Wilts.

Goatacre edged a one-wicket triumph away to Frocester, Hatherley & Reddings slipped up by 68 runs at home to Marshfield and Stroud held their nerve for a two-run home defeat of Dumbleton, brothers Callum, Louis and Angus Gegg all claiming two wickets apiece.

Bristol took advantage of a slip up by pacesetters Frome to move into pole position in Premier Two Bristol/Somerset after crushing Ilminster by nine wickets.

It was much closer at Bishopston who squeezed in by just one wicket against Weston-super-Mare while Winterbourne succumbed by five runs against Bath 2nds.

Jono Jamieson-Black enjoyed a memorable day for Cirencester, thumping 118 and then taking 4-51, in a 163-run victory away to Thornbury 2nds in the Gloucestershire division.

Jon Tegg’s 103 could not save Corse & Staunton from a 34-run home defeat against second-placed Gloucester while Mark Whitney hit an unbeaten 73 in Bourton Vale’s five-wicket home success over Cheltenham Civil Service.

Painswick trumped Apperley by 49 runs while Rockhampton completed a comfortable 65-run home triumph over Frocester 2nds.

Golden Hill made it four in a row at the top of Bristol & North Somerset with a 112-run home success over Bristol 2nds.

Twyford House moved up a place to second on the back of a six-wicket home victory against Stapleton.

Jonny Norman (4-30) put OB Westbury on course for a six-wicket home success against Congresbury, Rupert Swetman contributing an unbeaten 54. And Brislington wrapped up an eight-wicket home win against Bristol West Indian Phoenix.
